Claude Duet for small business: what to know

A practical guide to Claude Duet for small business: research preview access, pricing, useful workflows, approval controls, and where automation still fits.

The Botlane studioWritten by the people who build the work

Claude Duet is Anthropic’s proactive assistant: instead of waiting for you to start a chat, it checks connected apps, brings important work to your attention, and works on tasks while you are away. For a small business owner, the useful question is which pieces of everyday administration it can help with—and which still need a dependable business system.

This is a source-based guide, checked against Anthropic’s documentation on 30 October 2026. We have not independently tested the research preview. Features, eligibility, and limits may change.

What is Claude Duet?

Anthropic announced Claude Duet on 21 October 2026. It is a separate app for iOS and Android, also accessible through claude.ai, built for professionals and small business owners.

The practical difference from an ordinary chat is initiative. You can hand off work and step away; Duet can continue on its cloud computer and return when it has a result or needs a decision. Anthropic describes morning briefs, preparation work, and follow-ups across connected apps.

Connected accounts are checked periodically, so an urgent message can arrive between checks. Treat this as assistance with review, not real-time monitoring.

That makes it worth evaluating for owners whose work is spread across an inbox, calendar, accounting tool, and customer records. It does not establish that every workflow will run correctly without supervision.

Claude Duet pricing and availability

According to the official product page, the research preview is available through a waitlist for US users on Claude Pro and Max. Team and Enterprise plans are not included yet.

During the preview, access is included with those eligible plans. It shares your Claude usage allowance rather than providing a separate unlimited pool. Background checks and larger tasks count toward usage, so an assistant working while you are away can still use capacity you wanted for other work.

Joining the waitlist does not promise an invitation date. Check the current eligibility before subscribing specifically for Duet, and assess usage against a normal working week rather than a single successful task.

How to use Claude Duet without handing over everything

Anthropic’s getting-started guide explains the waitlist and invitation process. Use the email associated with your Claude account, then follow the invitation’s setup instructions.

Existing Claude connections can carry into Duet. The guide lists tools including Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, QuickBooks, HubSpot, Docusign, and Calendly. Check individual connector support: Microsoft 365 is not available yet, and Slack has limitations in Duet.

For a first evaluation, we recommend a narrow task with an output you can check quickly. Write down the source of truth, the permitted action, and what requires your review. Connect only what that task needs, while also reviewing connections already present in your Claude account.

A good starting instruction is specific about the boundary: “Prepare a meeting brief using the calendar entry and the files I identify. List any missing information rather than guessing.”

Three small business workflows worth evaluating

These are hypothetical trials, not customer results or promises about performance.

Meeting preparation. Choose one upcoming meeting. Ask for an agenda, outstanding questions, and links to supporting material. Check whether the brief separates confirmed facts from assumptions. Keep the original calendar and documents as the reference.

Invoice reminder drafts. Anthropic’s announcement describes finding unpaid invoices in QuickBooks or Stripe and drafting reminders. Before sending anything, check payment status, the recipient, any dispute, and the proposed wording. A recent payment or an agreed extension can change what a sensible reminder should say.

A morning review. Ask for a short list of items that need your attention. Compare it with your own inbox and calendar for several days. Record missed items as well as useful discoveries. The point of the trial is to learn whether it reduces review work without hiding important exceptions.

For each trial, measure time spent checking the output as well as time saved preparing it. A polished draft is only useful if verifying it takes less effort than doing the task yourself.

Approval controls and privacy deserve a closer look

Anthropic’s safety, privacy, and security explanation describes approval mechanisms for important actions and separate checks on whether actions match your intent. Duet is designed to ask before sending messages, making payments, signing documents, or deleting items. It also describes protections intended to keep credentials away from the model.

These are the provider’s stated safeguards, not a guarantee that mistakes cannot occur. Anthropic acknowledges that protections can miss something or flag harmless content.

Disconnecting an app stops new access, but information already learned can remain in memory until you reset it. Review both connection permissions and memory settings when ending a trial. Removing a connection and removing retained context are different actions.

Our recommendation is to start with preparation work and keep a person accountable for consequential decisions. Decide who reviews outputs before introducing a recurring routine.

Where a dedicated workflow still fits

Duet may help an owner decide what needs attention. Our engineering recommendation is to keep customer commitments in systems that record state explicitly: who requested a booking, whether it was confirmed, when a payment arrived, and who owns the next step.

For example, an appointment workflow needs a clear response when a slot disappears or a calendar connection fails. An assistant’s summary should not become the only record that a booking exists.

Before buying or building anything, map the current process. Our guides to AI appointment booking and choosing a chatbot or booking form can help identify the part that actually needs changing.

Try Duet against one defined administrative job. If the bottleneck is moving reliable information between business systems, explore a workflow automation project with clear ownership, failure handling, and review points. Let the result of the trial determine the next investment.
